The Barranquitas Campus of Inter American University of Puerto Rico and Institute of Sustainable Biotechnology invited applications for a training course on integrated pest management and Biocontrol in tropical agriculture. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a core management program that utilizes all available techniques in a complete management system with the intent of preventing pests from reaching unacceptable levels or to reduce an existing population to an acceptable level. After hurricane Maria, there may have been considerable increase in the variety and number of plant pests, which might threaten the future crop output in Puerto Rico. The two-day intensive training course aims to provide a suitable platform to researchers and farmers involved in the agriculture related fields to identify and control the pests using eco friendly means to yield improved farm output.
This course is suitable for young researchers, students, faculty, agronomists, field workers and farmers working with agricultural fields or communities.
Learning outcomes of the training course:
- Understand key concepts and elements involved in bio control using tropical integrated pest management strategies.
- Develop education and research programs on successful crop management in tropics.
- Evaluate the essential components and the general ecological considerations in pest management.
- Develop skills on organic agriculture practices using tissue culture methods.
- Gain insight on molecular methods to determine the identity of pests.
- Understand the impacts of pest management to agriculture.
Topics to be covered:
- Introduction to Biocontrol and integrated pest management
- Diverse components of agricultural pest management
- Identification of pests in agricultural farms
- Management of pest resistance to pesticides
- Methods of organic agriculture
- Role of various pathogens including nematodes, aphids and fungi
- Molecular/biochemical makers to identify pests
- PCR based to detect the identity of pests
- Concepts of tissue culture raised plants
